The IL-6 G(-174)C promoter polymorphism was examined for association with coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction in 2,559 LURIC patients and 729 angiographic controls. G-allele carriers had odds ratios of 0.98 (dominant) and 0.96 (recessive) for CAD, and IL-6 plasma levels did not differ by genotype in 942 randomly selected participants. The variant does not contribute to cardiovascular risk stratification.
