Associations between serum mineral concentrations and mortality by renal function in the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health Study

Serum mineral concentrations and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were examined by eGFR category in 3307 LURIC participants using Cox regression. Low sodium and iron were linked to increased overall mortality, elevated copper to increased mortality across all eGFR strata, and higher zinc to reduced mortality. All-cause mortality risk was fourfold higher for eGFR < 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2, emphasising regular monitoring of minerals and renal function in cardiovascular patients.
