Haptoglobin polymorphism, vitamin E and mortality: the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health Study

Delgado GE, Kleber ME, Moissl AP, Winklhofer-Roob BM, Krämer BK, Renner W, Langsenlehner T, Dschietzig TB et al.

The interaction between haptoglobin (Hp) polymorphism and vitamin E status in relation to mortality was examined in 3,176 LURIC participants using Cox proportional hazard regression. Among those with diabetes mellitus, a significant interaction between gamma-tocopherol plasma concentration and HP genotype was found (p = 0.021), with Hp2-2 carriers appearing to benefit from higher gamma-tocopherol concentrations. The findings suggest potential therapeutic implications of vitamin E supplementation strategies in cardiovascular patients stratified by Hp genotype.
