Symmetrical and asymmetrical dimethylarginine as predictors for mortality in patients referred for coronary angiography: the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health study

Meinitzer A, Kielstein JT, Pilz S, Drechsler C, Ritz E, Boehm BO, Winkelmann BR, März W

Serum SDMA and ADMA concentrations were measured in 3,229 LURIC patients undergoing coronary angiography and followed for a median of 7.7 years. In adjusted Cox models, the highest SDMA quartile had hazard ratios of 1.51 for total and 1.54 for cardiovascular mortality versus the lowest quartile; corresponding ADMA hazard ratios were 1.61 and 1.54. The divergent risk patterns suggest distinct pathophysiological roles for these two methylarginine metabolites.
