Lipoprotein associated phospholipase A2 concentration predicts total and cardiovascular mortality independently of established risk factors (The Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health Study)

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (LpPLA2) concentration was measured in 2,959 LURIC patients followed for a median of 8.0 years, during which 686 died. After adjustment for established risk factors, the highest LpPLA2 tertile (>=475 ng/mL) independently predicted all-cause mortality (HR 1.40, p = 0.001) and cardiovascular death (HR 1.35, p = 0.018), including in patients with elevated hsCRP. LpPLA2 concentration thus conveys prognostic information beyond conventional risk markers.
