Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were performed in 1772 coronary angiography patients without known diabetes, followed for a mean 7.7 years. Of 618 newly identified type 2 diabetes cases, 167 had isolated post-challenge hyperglycaemia, which independently predicted cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.57, p = 0.041). These results indicate that OGTT identifies a cardiovascular high-risk group undetected by fasting glucose or HbA1c.
