The cholestanol-to-cholesterol ratio (CR) was used to assess intestinal cholesterol absorption in the LURIC and Young Finns Study cohorts and in a meta-analysis of 6 studies (n = 4,362). ABCG8 variants rs4245791 and rs4299376 and ABO variant rs657152 were significantly associated with higher CR in LURIC; meta-analysis confirmed CR was elevated in cardiovascular disease cases. These findings implicate elevated cholesterol absorption, rather than plant sterols, in the cardiovascular risk conferred by ABCG8 and ABO variants.
