Beta-crosslaps (beta-CTX) and osteocalcin (OC) were measured in 986 women referred for coronary angiography in the LURIC cohort. The highest beta-CTX quartile was independently associated with all-cause mortality (HR 1.72, 95% CI 1.09–2.70) and cardiovascular mortality (HR 2.31, 95% CI 1.24–4.32); OC showed a reverse J-shaped association with noncardiovascular mortality. Bone turnover markers thus carry prognostic information beyond established cardiovascular risk factors in women at high cardiovascular risk.
