Serum tryptophan, neopterin, and hsCRP were measured in 1,196 LURIC patients with coronary artery disease to assess tryptophan as a mortality predictor. Tryptophan inversely correlated with neopterin (rs = -0.273) and hsCRP (rs = -0.163), and patients in the lowest quartile (< 34 uM) faced a hazard ratio of 1.51 (p = 0.0006) for total mortality over 10.5 years. Low serum tryptophan thus reflects immune activation and marks reduced life expectancy in CAD patients.
