Galectin-3 concentrations were measured in 2579 LURIC patients with coronary angiograms and 1168 dialysis patients with type 2 diabetes from the 4D study, spanning a broad range of renal function. Mean galectin-3 rose from 12.8 ng/ml at eGFR >=90 ml/min per 1.73 m2 to 54.1 ng/ml in dialysis patients. Galectin-3 independently predicted all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and fatal infection in patients with impaired but not normal renal function.
