Erythrocyte membrane fatty acid composition was measured in 3,259 LURIC participants and linked to mortality over a median 10.0-year follow-up. Total trans-fatty acids (TFAs) were inversely associated with cardiovascular mortality and sudden cardiac death, driven mainly by naturally occurring C16:1n-7t (trans-palmitoleic acid; HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.46-0.86, third vs. first tertile). No industrially produced TFA was associated with increased risk, suggesting that TFA source influences cardiovascular outcomes.
