Adiponectin concentrations and all-cause mortality were examined in 777 active smokers and 1,178 lifetime non-smokers from the LURIC cohort over a median 10-year follow-up. After adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors, higher adiponectin tertile independently predicted mortality in both groups: HR 1.83 (95% CI 1.28-2.62) for smokers and 1.56 (95% CI 1.15-2.11) for non-smokers. Elevated adiponectin thus identifies individuals at increased mortality risk regardless of smoking status.
