Erythrocyte EPA and DHA proportions were measured in 3,259 LURIC participants referred for coronary angiography; over a median follow-up of 9.9 years, 975 patients (29.9%) died, including 614 (18.8%) from cardiovascular causes. Both fatty acids were inversely associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality after adjustment for conventional risk factors, with the strongest effect observed for EPA (HR 0.89 per standard deviation increase). A non-linear relationship between EPA and mortality was also identified.
