Existing REML-based methods for heritability confidence interval construction were shown to produce biased estimates and inaccurate intervals when true heritability is low or high, with these deficiencies demonstrated in LURIC lipid profile data and GTEx gene expression data even in samples of thousands of individuals. A computationally efficient method, ALBI (accurate LMM-based heritability bootstrap confidence intervals), was proposed as an add-on to established tools such as GCTA, FaST-LMM, GEMMA, and EMMAX to restore accurate interval estimation.
