Erythrocyte concentrations of oleic acid (OA), gondoic acid (GA), and nervonic acid (NA) were measured in 3,259 LURIC participants and related to all-cause and cardiovascular mortality over a median follow-up of 10.0 years, with 975 deaths recorded. Each 1-SD increment in OA, GA, and NA was associated with higher all-cause mortality risk (hazard ratios 1.08, 1.07, and 1.12, respectively), suggesting that omega-9 fatty acids merit further investigation as prognostic markers.
