Free thyroid hormone concentrations were examined in relation to all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in 2,507 euthyroid LURIC participants followed for 10 years. Low free triiodothyronine (HR 0.54, highest vs lowest quartile) and high free thyroxine (HR 1.52, highest vs lowest quartile) independently predicted mortality, whereas TSH showed no consistent association. The findings suggest that free thyroid hormones should be measured in patients at intermediate to high coronary risk.
