In 3259 LURIC participants followed for a median of 10.0 years, erythrocyte omega-6 fatty acid proportions showed opposing mortality associations: gamma-linolenic acid was inversely associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality (HR 0.88 and 0.86 per 1-SD increase), while adrenic acid and docosapentaenoic acid omega-6 were directly associated (HR 1.10 and 1.12). Arachidonic acid showed no association, arguing against treating omega-6 PUFA as a single combined metric.
