Relative telomere length (RTL) was measured in 3,316 LURIC participants followed for a median of 9.9 years. Patients in RTL quartiles 2-4 had lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR 0.822, 95% CI 0.712-0.915, p = 0.008) and CVD mortality (HR 0.836, 95% CI 0.722-0.969, p = 0.017) than those in the lowest quartile; adjustment for age substantially attenuated both effects, suggesting short telomeres may be a surrogate for aging.
