Alcohol consumption and mortality were examined in 3316 LURIC patients followed for a median of 9.9 years (995 deaths, 622 cardiovascular). Cox regression showed a J-shaped pattern: low-volume drinkers had HR 0.75 and the highest-intake group HR 1.59 versus abstainers, but adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors rendered the protective effect non-significant. The results do not support a health benefit of low-level alcohol consumption in a high-risk cardiovascular cohort.
