In 2,082 LURIC patients followed for a median of 9.81 years, anemia (17.1%) was linked to cardiovascular disease severity and predicted adverse outcomes only when inflammatory markers were elevated. Anemia of chronic disease was associated with a higher cardio-cerebrovascular event rate within two years than other anemia or no anemia (14.3 vs. 6.1 vs. 4.0%, p < 0.001), suggesting its prognostic impact is driven primarily by underlying immune activation.
