This review examined the interaction between serum amyloid A (SAA) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the context of inflammation-driven cardiovascular disease. SAA incorporation into HDL was shown to impair cholesterol efflux capacity, reduce antioxidative activity, and promote a pro-inflammatory phenotype, converting protective HDL into a dysfunctional particle that contributes to atherogenesis. Elevated SAA levels are also associated with coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, identifying the SAA-HDL axis as a candidate therapeutic target.
