Statin therapy and its effects on circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 were examined in participants of the LURIC study. The analysis provided preliminary evidence that statins lower CRP levels by interfering with its generation or release in the liver, rather than by modulating inflammatory processes in the vessel wall. This distinction suggests the anti-inflammatory benefit of statins operates primarily through a hepatic mechanism.
