Free fatty acid (FFA) levels were examined as predictors of mortality in 3315 LURIC participants followed for a median of 5.38 years after coronary angiography. At the highest FFA quartile, fully adjusted hazard ratios reached 1.58 (p = 0.002) for all-cause death and 1.83 (p = 0.001) for cardiovascular death. FFAs also rose with heart failure severity and correlated positively with NT-pro-BNP, highlighting FFA metabolism as a potential therapeutic target in patients with coronary artery disease.
