NT-pro-BNP concentrations were examined as predictors of total and cardiovascular mortality in 1641 LURIC participants (1135 with and 506 without stable coronary artery disease) over a median follow-up of 5.45 years. Levels of >=2000 ng/L yielded unadjusted hazard ratios of 16.5 for all-cause death and 22.2 for cardiovascular death versus levels <100 ng/L. The associations persisted after adjustment for established risk factors, coronary atherosclerosis, and cardiac function.
