Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 predicts 5-year cardiac mortality independently of established risk factors and adds prognostic information in patients with low and medium high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (the Ludwigshafen risk and cardiovascular health study)

Winkler K, Hoffmann MM, Winkelmann BR, Friedrich I, Schäfer G, Seelhorst U, Wellnitz B, Wieland H et al.

LpPLA2 activity was measured in 3,232 LURIC patients followed for a median 5.5 years (501 deaths). The highest LpPLA2 tertile (>=510 U/L) independently predicted 5-year cardiac mortality (HR 2.0, 95% CI 1.4-3.1, p = 0.001) after adjustment for established risk factors, hsCRP, and NT-proBNP. LpPLA2 activity also identified elevated risk in patients with low or medium-high hsCRP, supporting its use beyond conventional risk stratification.
