Low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D predict fatal cancer in patients referred to coronary angiography

Pilz S, Dobnig H, Winklhofer-Roob B, Riedmüller G, Fischer JE, Seelhorst U, Wellnitz B, Boehm BO et al.

In 3,299 LURIC patients followed for a median of 7.75 years, 95 died of cancer. Patients in the highest 25(OH)D quartile had a hazard ratio of 0.45 (95% CI 0.22-0.93) relative to the lowest, and each 25 nmol/L increase in 25(OH)D corresponded to a hazard ratio of 0.66 (0.49-0.89); no association was found for 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. These results suggest that low vitamin D status increases fatal cancer risk.
