Serum neopterin and antioxidant concentrations were compared cross-sectionally in 1,463 LURIC patients undergoing coronary angiography. Neopterin was higher in patients with coronary artery disease (8.7 +/- 7.3 nmol/L) than in controls (7.4 +/- 5.0 nmol/L; p < 0.001) and correlated inversely with lycopene (rs = -0.277), ascorbic acid (rs = -0.207), and alpha-tocopherol (rs = -0.105). The results suggest that chronic immune activation contributes to depleted antioxidant levels in patients at risk for atherosclerosis.
