In 3316 LURIC participants followed for a median of 7.75 years, seasonal z values of 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D were examined as predictors of fatal stroke; 42 fatal strokes occurred during follow-up. After adjustment for confounders, odds ratios per z value were 0.67 (p = 0.032) for 25(OH)D and 0.72 (p = 0.047) for 1,25(OH)2D. These results indicate that low vitamin D levels independently predict fatal stroke, supporting supplementation as a potential preventive strategy.
