Lymphocytes of type 2 diabetic women carry a high load of stable chromosomal aberrations: a novel risk factor for disease-related early death

Boehm BO, Möller P, Högel J, Winkelmann BR, Renner W, Rosinger S, Seelhorst U, Wellnitz B et al.

Telomere length and chromosomal aberrations were examined in LURIC women with and without type 2 diabetes. Telomere attrition was accelerated across all LURIC subjects but did not predict survival; elevated marker chromosome counts were found specifically in type 2 diabetic women and were significantly higher in deceased than in surviving younger patients. These results identify stable chromosomal aberrations as a novel risk factor for diabetes-related early death.
