Serum zinc concentrations were measured in 3316 LURIC patients to assess associations with mortality over a median follow-up of 7.75 years, during which 769 deaths occurred. Compared with the highest zinc quartile, patients in the lowest quartile had hazard ratios of 1.44 for total mortality and 2.20 for non-cardiovascular mortality. The findings suggest that zinc deficiency may reduce life expectancy in patients referred for coronary angiography.
