The SOD3 R231G polymorphism was examined in 3,211 LURIC participants for associations with coronary artery disease (CAD) severity and myocardial infarction (MI) risk. Carriers of the RG or GG genotype had adjusted odds ratios of 2.02 (p = 0.005) for highest vs lowest Friesinger coronary score and 1.40 (p = 0.037) for MI, and lower alpha-tocopherol levels than RR homozygotes, indicating the SOD3 231G allele elevates cardiovascular risk.
