Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) was measured in 3,255 LURIC participants and its relation to all-cause and cardiovascular mortality examined over 7.75 years of follow-up. Hazard ratios for cardiovascular death reached 2.2 (95% CI 1.6-2.9) in the highest versus lowest GGT quartile and remained significant after adjustment for age, sex, and cardiovascular risk factors. These results support GGT as an independent prognostic marker in patients undergoing coronary angiography.
