CETP concentration was measured in 3,256 LURIC participants referred for coronary angiography (median follow-up 7.75 years) to examine its relation to cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. After multivariable adjustment, patients in the lowest CETP quartile had a hazard ratio for death of 1.33 (95% CI 1.07-1.65; P = 0.011) versus the highest quartile. Low endogenous CETP plasma levels thus appear independently associated with increased mortality, questioning the rationale for pharmacological CETP inhibition.
