Homocysteine metabolism and its relationship with immune activation and inflammation markers were examined in 1,717 LURIC participants undergoing coronary angiography, of whom 1,325 (77.2%) had coronary artery disease. Homocysteine correlated with neopterin (rs = 0.325, p < 0.001), and hyperhomocysteinaemic patients showed significantly higher CRP concentrations and impaired renal and cardiac function as reflected by ProBNP levels. The findings suggest that homocysteine accumulation may result from B-vitamin deficiency linked to chronic immune activation.
