In 3,296 LURIC participants, plasma renin concentration and angiotensin 2 both increased across declining deciles of 25(OH)D (P = 0.013 and P = 0.020) and 1,25(OH)2D (P = 0.045 and P = 0.024), with both metabolites emerging as independent predictors in multivariate regression. These results provide the first human evidence that lower vitamin D status is independently associated with upregulation of the circulating renin-angiotensin system.
