Among 3,245 LURIC participants followed for a mean of 7.3 years, the highest serum uric acid (SUA) quartile was associated with elevated cardiovascular mortality (HR = 2.00, p < 0.001) and sudden cardiac death (HR = 2.27, p < 0.001) versus the lowest quartile. Associations persisted after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors and coronary atherosclerosis severity. High SUA thus independently predicts cardiovascular and sudden cardiac death in patients referred for coronary angiography.
