Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) is associated with total and cardiovascular mortality in individuals with or without stable coronary artery disease--results from the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health Study (LURIC)

Lepper PM, Kleber ME, Grammer TB, Hoffmann K, Dietz S, Winkelmann BR, Boehm BO, März W

LBP plasma levels were measured in 2959 LURIC participants over a median follow-up of 8.0 years. LBP was higher in patients with angiographically confirmed CAD than in those without atherosclerosis (6.78 vs. 6.13 ug/mL, p < 0.001) and independently predicted all-cause mortality (HR 1.43, p = 0.024) and cardiovascular mortality in the fourth quartile (HR 1.55, p = 0.025) after multivariable adjustment, implicating innate immune activation in atherosclerotic risk.
