Among 2,002 LURIC participants without prior diabetes, subjects newly classified as diabetic under the ADA 2010 definition (incorporating HbA1c) but not under ADA 2009 (n = 150) showed significantly elevated cardiovascular mortality over a mean follow-up of 7.7 years (P = 0.029). HbA1c-based reclassification thus identifies a high-risk subgroup and may improve cardiovascular risk stratification among patients undergoing coronary angiography.
