In 2,455 LURIC participants referred for coronary angiography, type 2 diabetes duration was strongly associated with both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality over a mean follow-up of 7.4 years. Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios for cardiovascular death increased progressively from 1.76 for new-onset diabetes to 4.55 for duration exceeding 10 years, compared with non-diabetic subjects. These findings support inclusion of diabetes duration in cardiovascular mortality risk prediction.
