Serum zinc concentrations and their associations with immune activation markers neopterin and C-reactive protein (CRP) were examined in 2,048 LURIC patients referred for coronary angiography. Zinc levels did not differ between patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and controls, but were inversely correlated with neopterin (rs = -0.222) and CRP (rs = -0.166; both p < 0.0001). These findings suggest that low zinc levels reflect heightened inflammatory activity rather than a direct relationship with CAD per se.
