Plasma lipid species were quantified by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in the LURIC cohort, with Cox regression assessing associations with total and cardiovascular mortality. Highly polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine and lysophosphatidylcholine species appeared protective, while ether-linked phosphatidylethanolamine and saturated phosphatidylcholine species showed the strongest positive associations with mortality. A ratio of the six most protective to the six most harmful species indicated an approximately 3-fold increased mortality risk.
