In 1196 LURIC patients, the phenylalanine-to-tyrosine ratio (Phe/Tyr), an index of phenylalanine hydroxylase activity, did not differ between patients with and without coronary artery disease, but correlated with neopterin (rs = 0.216, p < 0.0001) and hsCRP (rs = 0.122, p < 0.0001). These findings indicate that systemic immune activation suppresses phenylalanine hydroxylase activity, potentially contributing to neuropsychiatric symptoms in cardiovascular patients.
