MPO plasma concentrations and eight MPO polymorphisms were assessed in 3,036 LURIC participants (median follow-up 7.75 years). Highest-quartile MPO concentrations were independently associated with 1.34-fold total mortality risk (95% CI 1.09-1.67) and a cardiovascular mortality hazard ratio of 1.42 (95% CI 1.07-1.88), while Mendelian randomization found no causal association. The results indicate that MPO is a risk marker rather than a causal determinant of mortality in coronary artery disease patients.
