In 2196 anticoagulant-free LURIC participants followed for a median of 10 years, endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) showed an inverse association with cardiovascular death, with the lowest hazard ratio in the 4th ETP quartile. Markers of endothelial dysfunction (sICAM-1, sVCAM-1) reached their nadirs in the 3rd quartile. These results indicate that slightly elevated, rather than minimal, thrombin generation is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality.
