Hemoglobin and iron metabolism parameters were measured in 1,480 LURIC patients with stable angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD) and 682 individuals without CAD. In multivariate analyses, the lowest quartiles of hemoglobin and serum iron were associated with CAD (OR 1.62 and 2.05, respectively), and these associations remained independent of each other after full adjustment. The results indicate that anemia and iron depletion each contribute independently to CAD risk.
