Coagulation factor concentrations were compared between 777 active smokers and 1,178 lifetime non-smokers from the LURIC cohort. Active smokers displayed higher fibrinogen, factor XIII, and tissue factor pathway inhibitor but lower FVII, FVIII, von Willebrand factor, and thrombomodulin; Cox regression identified five coagulation factors as independent mortality predictors, with hazard ratios of 1.16-1.40 per standard deviation. These findings indicate that coagulation markers should inform cardiovascular risk prediction in active smokers.
