hsCRP and LpPLA2 were compared in 777 smokers and 1,178 never-smokers from the LURIC cohort; both biomarkers were significantly higher in smokers. Combined high-tertile status for both markers predicted mortality with adjusted hazard ratios of 1.85 (1.04-3.28) in never-smokers and 1.94 (1.10-3.45) in smokers versus the lowest tertile of both. Because a relevant proportion of patients showed elevation of only one biomarker, measuring both is recommended in high-risk cardiovascular patients.
