Plasma NGAL concentrations were measured in 2,997 LURIC participants (mean age 62.7 years, 69.7% men) over a 10-year follow-up. A U-shaped relationship with mortality was observed: the highest NGAL quartile (>=56 ng/ml) carried increased cardiovascular (HR 1.33, 95% CI 1.05-1.67) and all-cause mortality risk (HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.07-1.55) versus the third quartile, but adjustment for creatinine abolished both associations, indicating NGAL does not predict mortality independently of renal function.
