Erythrocyte saturated fatty acid proportions were measured by gas chromatography in 3259 LURIC participants and related to mortality over a median follow-up of 9.9 years. Palmitic acid (C16:0) was associated with increased all-cause mortality (HR 1.08, 95% CI 1.01-1.16 per 1-SD increase), whereas other individual SFAs and the sum of all SFAs showed no such association. The findings underscore the importance of examining individual fatty acids rather than grouped saturated fatty acid totals.
