Iron metabolism markers and hepcidin were examined in 2162 LURIC participants (1480 with stable CAD, 682 without significant CAD) over a median follow-up of 9.9 years. Serum iron, transferrin saturation, soluble transferrin receptor, and ferritin had J-shaped associations with total and cardiovascular mortality, while hemoglobin showed only a marginal association. Hepcidin was continuously and inversely related to mortality (HR 0.62, 95% CI 0.49-0.78, highest vs lowest quartile).
